Pepsi Trying to Grab Onto The Youth Market

Each year the NFL unleashes many ads that run throughout the NFL season, this year was no different.  The NFL is most watched sport in the United States, so many companies want to market their products to the millions and millions of loyal NFL fans. Pepsi wanted to capitalize on the NFL fans and launch their new One Direction and Drew Brees commercials.

Over the years Pepsi has lost a controlling stake in the Soda Pop war between Coke, as a matter of fact they have slipped to the number three soda beverage in the world (Coke has both one and two currently). Pepsi's previous marketing plan was to not spend money on marketing but give back to the earth, that marketing plan failed in my opinion.  Pepsi went back to the External Marketing Environment that they are very comfortable with and have used for many years. (Cultural/Social)
Pepsi went out and got one of the biggest boy bands in the world and a very popular Super Bowl winning NFL Quarterback to make a commercial together.  The premise of this commercial appears ridiculous but the target market is geared towards the younger crowd (11-20) and The Saints faithful.

In my personal opinion I think this is one of the better commercials that Pepsi has done over the years.  Pepsi is trying to position themselves to move up the Soda Pop rankings and they are banking on the millions of young fans (future Pepsi drinkers) that One Direction will bring with them. If Pepsi continues to use marketing strategies like this one, I believe that Pepsi will move up the Soda Pop Rankings.
